Welcome to the Bicycle Club

by Steve Mysse

In this issue - “Safety Steve” covers a few of the do’s and don’ts of riding safe.

Welcome to the bicycle club’s new online newsletter. This is the first in a series of articles where we’ll discuss bicycle safety, etiquette and culture. The subject of safety is of extreme importance – some of my comments, maybe not so much.

The first and most important thing – WEAR A HELMET! While this is obvious to most serious cyclists, I am still amazed at seeing children and adults hurtling bareheaded towards oblivion. Your brain bucket can be a statement of fashion and cool, as well as protection.  My noggin has been saved many a time from the rolling pin -  after getting home 2 hours late from a ride.

Bright colored clothing can also be a safety feature. Inattentive motorists are easier to identify you as a slow moving vehicle (or circus clown).

Most new bicycles come equipped with reflective devices for and aft as well as on each wheel. Don’t be a dork! Take these off and save them in a drawer – you shouldn’t be out after dark anyhow.

That’s enough for this time, next month I will study the subject of dealing with traffic , hand signals and training partners. If there are other topics you would like me to spout off about – let me know.

Safety Steve
